Tips to Save Energy While Working from Home

Saving up energy takes very minor lifestyle changes that can help you save money and live responsibly without significantly impacting your day-to-day activities. Some ways to achieve greater energy savings include:

1.   Try Shifting to a Laptop

Laptops, on average, consume 80% less energy than a desktop PC. Where your desktop requires 60 to 200 Watts of electricity, the laptop will just take up 20 to 50 Watts.

When you consider putting in an 8-hour shift on a desktop and compare it with a laptop—the differential is huge.

2.   Don’t Use Wall Sockets

Appliances that are plugged into wall sockets will continue using up energy even if they’re shut off.

You should invest in a power strip instead and plug your work electronics to it—so when you turn off the strip, the electronics are cut off from the main power supply.

3.   Use the Power Management Settings on Your Computers

Whether you have a laptop or a desktop, you should activate the power management settings on them to make sure that they don’t use up too much energy.

While the effect is probably marginal—when you consider the cumulative effects on your bills and energy waste—it’s definitely worth a shot.
