Battery 101: Everything You Need to Know

Learn how to size your battery bank, compare chemistries, and choose the right lithium solution for your application.

How Much Battery Do You Need?

Size your battery bank too small and you'll end up dependent on a generator every time demand spikes. Size it too large and you'll add unnecessary complexity and upfront cost that takes years to recoup.

The right answer starts with knowing your actual daily energy consumption — in kilowatt-hours (kWh). List every device you plan to power, its wattage, and how many hours per day it runs. Multiply and sum to get your daily baseline.

Daily Usage Formula ──────────────────── Watts × Hours/Day = kWh/Day Example: 1,000W × 10hr = 10 kWh/day

Sizing Your Battery Bank

Using 10 kWh/day as the example:

Lead Acid Formula

10 kWh × 2 (50% DoD)
× 1.2 (inefficiency)
= 24 kWh needed

Lithium Formula

10 kWh × 1.2 (80% DoD)
× 1.05 (inefficiency)
= 12.6 kWh needed

Key Advantage

Lithium requires only HALF the physical size of a comparable lead-acid system due to better efficiency and deeper discharge capability.

Voltage Configuration Examples

24 kWh Lead Acid
12V2,000Ah
24V1,000Ah
48V500Ah
12.6 kWh Lithium
12V1,050Ah
24V525Ah
48V262.5Ah

Factors That Affect Your System

🌡️

Temperature

Ambient temperature affects battery performance and available capacity. Cold climates reduce effective capacity; self-heating models compensate automatically.

🌤️

Seasonal Variation

Solar power generation varies by season. Size your bank for low-production months to avoid energy shortfalls when you need power most.

💰

Budget

Balance ideal capacity with available budget. Lithium's lower TCO (total cost of ownership) often makes it more economical long-term despite higher upfront cost.
