Is the 18kPV enough for whole home backup?
For most homes, yes. It delivers 12,000W continuous output with 18,000W PV input, enough to run a full residential panel including air conditioning and a well pump. All-electric homes with electric heat and range may need the FlexBOSS21 or a second unit.
18kPV or FlexBOSS18: what is the difference?
The 18kPV gives 12,000W output with 18,000W PV input. The FlexBOSS18 gives 13,000W output with the same 18,000W PV input, adds 90A grid feed-through, and is designed to pair with the GridBOSS MID for advanced load management. FlexBOSS is the newer generation.
Does the 18kPV need a GridBOSS?
No, it works on its own. The GridBOSS 200A MID is an optional add-on that enables smart load management, AC coupling and generator support. Most people add it when they want to control which circuits stay live during an outage.
What batteries are UL 9540 certified with the 18kPV?
BigBattery ETHOS and EG4 batteries, for both grid-tied and off-grid closed-loop operation. That pairing matters for permitted installations, since UL 9540 certification applies to the inverter and battery as a system rather than to either component alone.
How fast does the 18kPV switch during an outage?
UPS switching is 15 to 30ms, fast enough that sensitive electronics stay running. It is an all-in-one design combining inverter, charger and charge controller, which reduces both the component count and the installation complexity.
