For a straightforward off-grid system, APEX gives more output per dollar — the APEX-6.5K delivers 6.5kW for less than the 6kW EG4 6000XP. Choose EG4 when you need a large solar array (8kW of PV on the 6000XP, 24kW on the 12000XP V2), or when the install has to pass inspection as a UL9540 grid-tied system, which only the EG4 hybrids cover.

Size it to the largest load you run at once, not your monthly usage. A cabin or essentials-only backup is comfortable at 6kW. A typical whole home with a well pump and central air wants 10 to 12kW. Above that — a large home, shop or light commercial — look at the 16kW FlexBOSS21.

An off-grid inverter runs from batteries and solar with no utility interconnection, which keeps it simpler and cheaper. A hybrid also ties into the grid, so it can sell back, charge from utility power and pass a UL9540 inspection. If your system will be permitted and grid-connected, you need a hybrid.

GridBOSS is a 200A microgrid interconnection device. It coordinates several inverters, handles generator input and manages smart loads so a multi-inverter system behaves as one. You need it once you go past a single inverter or want automatic generator integration.
