Choosing the Right Solar Inverter
A solar inverter converts DC electricity from your solar and battery system into AC power that can be used by household loads. Choosing the right inverter depends on your system design, required power output, battery configuration and whether the system will operate off-grid, grid-connected or as a hybrid system.
Start by comparing continuous AC output with the loads you expect to run at the same time. You should also consider system voltage, available PV input, battery compatibility and whether your installation requires split-phase 120/240V output.
Off-Grid vs Hybrid Solar Inverters
Off-grid solar inverters are designed for systems that operate independently from the utility grid, using available solar generation and battery storage to supply connected loads. Hybrid inverters can combine solar, battery and grid power within a compatible system configuration.
The right choice depends on how the system will be used. If the property will operate independently from the utility, an off-grid inverter may be appropriate. If the system needs to work with both battery storage and a utility connection, compare compatible hybrid inverter options and their individual specifications.
Solar Inverter and Battery Compatibility
Your inverter and battery must be compatible with the voltage and electrical requirements of the system. Some inverter and battery combinations may also support communication between their battery management and inverter controls, depending on the products used.
Always confirm the supported battery voltage, communication requirements and manufacturer compatibility information for the specific inverter before building your system.

Should I buy a BigBattery APEX or an EG4 inverter?
For a straightforward off-grid system, APEX gives more output per dollar — the APEX-6.5K delivers 6.5kW for less than the 6kW EG4 6000XP. Choose EG4 when you need a large solar array (8kW of PV on the 6000XP, 24kW on the 12000XP V2), or when the install has to pass inspection as a UL9540 grid-tied system, which only the EG4 hybrids cover.
What size solar inverter do I need?
Size it to the largest load you run at once, not your monthly usage. A cabin or essentials-only backup is comfortable at 6kW. A typical whole home with a well pump and central air wants 10 to 12kW. Above that — a large home, shop or light commercial — look at the 16kW FlexBOSS21.
What is the difference between off-grid and hybrid inverters?
An off-grid inverter runs from batteries and solar with no utility interconnection, which keeps it simpler and cheaper. A hybrid also ties into the grid, so it can sell back, charge from utility power and pass a UL9540 inspection. If your system will be permitted and grid-connected, you need a hybrid.
What does the EG4 GridBOSS do?
GridBOSS is a 200A microgrid interconnection device. It coordinates several inverters, handles generator input and manages smart loads so a multi-inverter system behaves as one. You need it once you go past a single inverter or want automatic generator integration.
Are these inverters split-phase 120/240V?
Yes — the BigBattery APEX models and all the EG4 off-grid and hybrid inverters output split-phase 120/240V pure sine wave, so they run both standard outlets and 240V appliances like well pumps, dryers and air conditioners.
Which batteries work with these inverters?
